Texas Residents Directory is not a records office. It cannot search a government database for you, issue a certified copy, verify a current address, or change an official record. Send those requests to the custodian. Call 911 in an emergency. Report stalking or harassment to local law enforcement.

Contact the Office Holding the Record

For common Texas record questions, start with the custodian that keeps that record:

  • Parcel and street records: use the county appraisal district and county clerk links in the Texas street directory
  • Historic books: browse the Texas city directory collections and contact the library holding the volume
  • One-person record search: follow the Texas resident lookup paths, then confirm a match with the office
  • State and local custodians: see Texas resident records offices
  • Records not published online: send a written request under the Texas Public Information Act to the governmental body that holds the existing record

The Texas Attorney General's Public Information Act guidance explains the written-request route. The request itself goes to the public information officer of the city, county, district, or state agency that maintains the record; the Attorney General does not replace those custodians.

Texas Open Government Hotline: Office of the Attorney General, (512) 478-6736 or toll-free (877) 673-6839. The hotline provides Public Information Act guidance and can take a message for callback. The official page does not list its call hours. For records held by the Attorney General's office, use its Public Information Request instructions; they list hand delivery to the Public Information Coordinator's Office, 209 W. 14th Street, Austin, Texas 78701, during normal business hours, along with separate mail, email, fax, and online routes.
